When the rain is lashing down, you don’t feel like going to the cinema or, for that matter, going anywhere else. You’re quite happy to roll with a duvet day instead and spend it in bed, all nice and warm, and watching a box set or movie on Netflix.
Well, a cinema in Spreitenbach, Switzerland, has picked up on this and decided to offer a new experience. The Cinema Pathé has done away with seating in its ‘VIP Bedroom’ screen, which opened recently, and replaced it all with 11 double beds. The cinema is also selling slippers to make the experience even more cosy.
The VIP tickets cost 49 francs (approximately £37) and they include food and drinks. The cinema is trying to entice movie goers with new food offerings, including crêpes and waffles. Best of all, perhaps, VIP guests won’t even have to queue up for their food and drink.
Kind of makes you wish you lived in Switzerland to visit a cinema like that, doesn’t it? If not that, then you’ll be thinking at least they could do something like that where you are. You don’t have to travel all the way to Switzerland or even to your local cinema to do it, though. Why not transform your bedroom into your own little cinema?
Mounting equipment and storing it
A slimline TV will be easy to mount, but you should consider consulting a specialist installer, who will be able to advise you on the best cabling, internet points and power points. The electrics are a major component and you should also think about the electrical circuits and whether any rooms are also sharing power on the same electrical circuit as your room.
When setting up your equipment, bear in mind your own nature as a DIY-type person. If you’re the kind of person who likes to adjust and hone things a lot, you probably won’t mind a few cables lying around ― the easy access is the pay-off! Making your room more of a showpiece? You might prefer to put up some shelves or other units to keep everything tidy and in one place.
Seating or bedding?
The cinema described above is unique because of the comfort factor it offers. You can have seats if you want, of course. There’s nothing wrong with that, but why not make the room ultra comfortable and watch the movie from a nice, big bed instead? Follow the Spreitenbach cinema’s lead with a double bed and then get some comfy pillows and kick back.
Check that there will be enough distance between the bed and the screen. If possible, the bed should be 10 feet (120 inches) away from the screen. You don’t want to feel as if you’re sitting on the very front row and looking up at the screen, nor do you want to have to squeeze past the screen.
Setting up surround sound
Let’s face it: you can’t have a home cinema and not have surround sound. Position the speakers so they distribute various layers of sound. A good setup to use is the 5:1 setup. This means having five satellite speakers ― three of these around the screen or behind it and two at the back of the room. The ‘1’ is the subwoofer and this reproduces low-pitched frequencies or the bass. This system is also a good system to implement if you’re on a budget. It’s better to spend more money on a good quality 5:1 than less money on a low quality 6:1 or 7:1 sound system.
Soundproofing your room
If you’re installing surround sound for that full cinematic experience, you’ll need to soundproof your room (unless you don’t mind upsetting your neighbours, in which case you won’t!). You can go for an inexpensive option, such as acoustic wall tiles or installing sound-absorbing material behind the wall, or you could go for a more luxurious option and upholster the walls. The key to soundproofing a room is to use thick materials, including a thick carpet and curtains, rather than materials that will help to transfer or reflect the sound.
Lighting
We’ve all seen it in cheesy movies. The rich stylish homeowner walks into a room, claps their hands or calls out ‘Lights’ or something similar and hey presto, on come the lights. It was quite high tech and luxurious at the time, but now it’s much more possible and accessible in this internet age of ours. You can do more or less the same by using smart lighting, which involves setting up Alexa or Google Home and using your voice to control the lights.
Turn your bedroom into a home cinema and you could really add that touch of class to your home. Be sure to test everything as you go along. You don’t want to premier your new system and find the electrics aren’t working or you’ve not mounted the screen firmly enough. It would make a disaster of the grand opening! Take your time, consider all the different aspects above and create a bedroom cinema that makes even Cinema Pathé, Spreitenbach, jealous!
