The wingback chair is the type of a chair first introduced in England in the 17th century, easily recognizable by its “wings” stretching down to the armrest to provide comfortable protection from drafts.
Used for several hundred years, today we have many different types and styles of wingback chairs that can be used in numerous ways around your home.
You can buy them almost anywhere, from the modern shops (accent chairs Ikea) to yard sales where you might get lucky enough to find a genuine vintage wingback chair on sale.
So let’s take a look at some of the most popular ways to use a wing chair.
Near a Fireplace

From the time of their invention, wing back chairs have been commonly used next to a fireplace to protect the person sitting in this type of high back chair from the direct heat of a fire. Even today, hundreds of years later, the spot next to a fireplace is reserved for a wing back chair in many homes around the world.
In a Foyer
Nice Ikea chairs are often used to warm up the home’s entryway both for the practical and the aesthetical reasons.
Not only does a beautiful leather wingback chair in a foyer create a feeling of entering a cozy and stylish house, but it is also great to have a nice spot to sit on while putting on shoes. Choosing an Ikea leather chair is a good choice because the leather really ages well and never goes out of style.
Mixed with the Dining Chairs

Having mix-and-match chairs is one of the latest trends so placing a modern wingback chair at the head of the table looks stylish and creates the illusion that the room is wider than it actually is.
Choose an Ikea chair that matches the rest of the room but don’t make it all matchy-matchy with the rest of the chairs in the room. A bit of pleasant contrast is a good thing.
In a Bedroom

There is something naturally classy about high back chairs so you can use it for the purpose of decorating a room as well. Adding a nice Ikea lounge chair to your bedroom will look chic and it will also be an ideal spot for curling up with a book or simply sit on when putting on shoes.
In a Living Room

One of the most popular ways of using Ikea accent chairs is placing them in your living room; and if you want your living room to be even more unique, place twin wing chairs next to each other, top them off with a pair of lovely pillows and let them take the classiness of your TV room to a whole new level.
Instead of a Desk Chair
If you work long hours behind your desk, you want your chair to be as comfortable as it gets.
For that reason, choosing a comfy Ikea armchair might be a perfect solution for you if you are looking for a chair that will both turn your office into a comfortable place as well as into a stylish one.
A Wingback Chair Reading Nook

If you are a book lover, you probably want your little reading nook to be the place of comfort and rest while also being visually pleasing.
Turning an Ikea rocking chair into your own personal reading nook will be both! Pair it up with a retro lamp that will match the overall style of the room and enjoy your favorite books in a romantic and modern atmosphere.
Reupholstering a Wing Chair

There is something almost vintage about high back accent chairs and if you want to keep their retro look nice and fresh, you will have to reupholster them at some point. Luckily, it is not as difficult as it might seem.
Here is what you need:
- The winged chair
- Fabric to recover with
- The tiniest screwdriver available to you
- A sewing machine
- A stapler
- A hammer
- Gloves
- A sheet or something else to lay it on the ground
- A container for the removed staples
Before Upholstering

Before you start the whole process of reupholstering your Ikea wingback char or any other wingback armchair of your choice, you need to think about the upholstery that will match the style of the room where you are planning to place your strandmon.
Choosing a color that will show every little stain (grey chair, for example) and a material that will not fade easily is a good way to go; after all, you don’t want to reupholster your chair all that often.
If you need to change the foam on your high back wing chair as well, make sure to choose the right density. Upholstery foam comes in several densities and you will be able to recognize them by their color.
Dark blue or black is usually the densest type of upholstery foam, purple is medium, while the light blue is the softest.
Reupholstering: Step by Step

First, let’s start with a simple tip that will save you a lot of trouble later down the road. When you start taking your Ikea strandmon apart, label each piece with its location and number. It is important to keep those parts organized because you will have to put them back in their spot eventually.
Ok, now that we know this, let’s take a look at the reupholstering process step by step:
Step 1
Use a sheet or something else to lay it on the ground because there will be a lot of mess once you start taking your back chair apart. Turn the strandmon wing chair so the legs are in the air and start removing staples from the bottom of the chair. Don’t get discouraged if it doesn’t go as easily as you expected. Just take your time and take out all the staples you find.
Once you’ve removed all the staples from the bottom, remove the dark mesh material that is usually there, as well as the cardboard and piping (if there is any). Then put the Ikea arm chair back upright.
Step 2
The next thing you need to focus on is the back of the high wing chairs. Use the screwdriver between the edge of the fabrics and pry the tack board (the part that looks like a strip of metal with metal teeth called Ply Grip) from the chair. Take out all the staples along the way.
Step 3
The 3rd thing you’re going to work on is removing the sides. The process is basically the same as with the back of high backed wing chairs. You’ll probably find some cardboard strips as well so try to keep the pieces together as you remove them.
Step 4
Remove the stuffing and label which side it goes to. Keep in mind that the sharp teeth will have to be removed if you want to get to all the layers but keep track of the order of the individual layers. Also, you will have to reuse the teeth so don’t lose them.
Step 5
There are probably some decorative elements nailed to the armrests. Use the screwdriver or a hammer to pry them off. Then remove the armrest fabric pieces. Once that is done, your chair should be completely “naked”.
Step 6
Lay out the fabric pieces you’ve taken off your chair and cut the new pieces. Then sew new piping (refer to the old piping for the length).
Step 7
When putting the fabric back on your wing chair, do it in the opposite order from taking the pieces down; the last piece you took down will be the first one to go up.
Staple one side of the fabric, stretch it out, then pull the other sides. When doing this, make sure it is tight enough to avoid wrinkles but not too tight because it might result in the fabric ripping. The piping goes on the outside sides.
If you paid attention to how your small wingback chair was assembled before you took the upholstery apart, you should have no problem with putting it all back up.
If you have a wingback chair with ottoman, you will probably find reupholstering the ottoman a piece of cake once you’re done with the chair so we will not get into too many details about that.

Take a step back and enjoy the results of your effort. You should have a beautiful modern wing chair at this point.
