What makes the rambler house style great and what defines it

The building style of the United States is unique in many ways. Whoever travels the country can see many architectural currents ranging from the simplest to the most extreme. But perhaps the most striking is what we can see in large areas of land.

A rambler house (a name by which it is commonly known) is a sample of the urban standards established in 1900, but which has recently won back the heart of more than one inhabitant. Let’s get to know this style a bit.

Defining a rambler home

The first thing to note is that Rambler does not refer to a car brand, but to an architectural style of the USA that dominated the market in 1920 and later between 1940 and 1970. This is also known as the ranch-style.

In conception, it is a mixture of modern design and the large livestock plots of the west of the country. It can be seen that it is intended as a spacious home in the horizontal area, choosing to dispose of multi-level homes.

Normally, this informal style is accompanied by some characteristic elements, such as “L”, “U” or simply rectangular plants, large windows on the front facade (or the facade facing the street), and low ceilings level but with elongated eaves that extend throughout the perimeter of the house. Sliding doors are also a standard when it comes to creating ample spaces.

It is logical to ask how is it that these houses that look so luxurious, spacious and expensive can be called ranches. The concept varies depending on the country, but in the United States, it is a synonym for economic well-being.

How did they become that? Why are they so popular a century after their birth? Let’s review the history of rambler homes.

Rambler style houses, a history of the whole country

During the 1930s, a large number of architectural movements that combined new construction technologies with previous knowledge were converging in the state of California.

A clash of cultures occurred in this place, such as the Spanish Colonial Renaissance, which were single-level houses that had a central courtyard without a roof, or the Craftsman movement.

Amid this process, a variant of the Spanish colonial style emerged that would be called Rambler style. In the southwest of the United States, temperatures are very high, so a single-story house with wide roofs served to mitigate much of the heat of the seasons. Somewhere in the process, the architects decided to abandon the O-style of the Spanish colony and decided that the plants were L or U-shaped.

The economic reconstruction of the country allowed this style that occupied large areas of land to become very popular between 1950 and 1960, but little by little it lost popularity due to the great waste of space that these horizontal styles entailed, in addition that the heating costs were very high.

Gradually, the 2-story houses and the big buildings began to dominate the market, although we can still find some old rambler houses in good condition or failing that, tycoons that still appreciate the style. The open appearance of a rambler house is still a very striking style, and that built correctly can become as efficient as a current house.

Characteristics of rambler house style

Not everything is informal in this style. Although it emerged as a very original way to have a relaxed atmosphere in the suburbs of the twentieth century, they managed to adopt a couple of elements that made them different from country ranches.

Spacious and continuous plants

If they adopted something of the Spanish colonial style, these were the spacious floors with a central corridor that revolved around a central area. This type of distribution allowed to locate the rooms on the sides and leave a continuous airflow between them.

Additionally, the rooms are large, ventilated and with a good source of natural light. The social areas did not have notable separations, so the private areas of the house were practically contiguous.

A lot of horizontal space, little vertical

Another quality that they adopted directly from the Spanish colony is that a rambler house was from a single plant. With so much horizontal space, there was no need to build a second floor, although at some point they were added. This design benefits especially those who do not want or cannot climb stairs since everything you need is on a single floor.

An immense facade parallel to the street

Before this style, the great majority of the facades of the homes were thin and tall, with the rooms towards the bottom. Rambler style houses changed this since the dimensions of the facade that directly faced the street became twice the depth of the house. That is, if the house was 10 meters deep, the front facade measured 20 meters.

Converging with nature

Image source: Vision Homes & Remodeling

In order not to get away from its peasant origins, ramblers’ homes sought to create a link with nature, so they stood out for having large windows or sliding glass doors. People never felt suffocated inside them.

This was also the cause of the backyard gaining so much importance. The homes until then separated the backyard with walls from the rest of the house, but that disappeared with the arrival of this cooler style.

What is the appeal of the Rambler houses?

All owners of a rambler house agree that they have certain characteristics that make them more comfortable to inhabit, such as:

  • Houses of this style are usually in established neighborhoods, so green areas and paths are included in each corner. They are places rich in history.
  • Maintenance is easier since you only have to dedicate time and effort to a single floor.
  • The internal distribution is simple and can be expanded almost without any problem since it will be enough to attach a new rectangular room at some end.
  • The clear roads between the green areas and the house allow us to enjoy nature from any position of the house. Thanks to its construction in O, L or U, the central courtyard will provide us with communication with each area.
  • For older people or those with walking difficulties, these single-storey houses are perfect.

With some of the advantages known, we can finally see examples of people’s inventiveness to create the best rambler houses.

Popular types of rambler homes

In the United States, it is common to see a mixture of old and new styles. Even the rambler style has its variants, although all remain recognizable within the architecture of the twentieth century. These are just some of the most characteristic styles that have their personalities.

Split- Level Ranch – Those seeking privacy

It has three levels if we include the ground floor. This is a way to divide the rooms, the kitchen and the living room with a couple of stairs.

California ranch – Born for California

This was born as the home of architect Cliff May, but later became a trend throughout California. A mixture of the Arts & Crafts trend with the Spanish colonial style, but adapted to the Californian landscape.

Raised Ranch – A tall variant

This type of rambler house is coupled with an additional level, and the name is attributed to the fact that the ground floor is slightly raised from the ground so that the entrance has a small staircase.

Suburban Ranch – A version for all audiences

After World War II, these types of houses became extremely popular for mass construction. They were reduced versions of the California versions, this time built with concrete slabs.

Storybook Ranch Homes – Refined Tastes

Some even call them Cinderella’s ranches because of the number of details so delicate that they adorn the different facades. The structure protrudes from the walls to be a fundamental part of the decoration, the glass panels have more complex shapes than the typical squares, and the additional ornaments are the standard of this style.

Looking for a calm life

Rambler style can be compared to jazz music. It is something quiet, which not everyone likes, but with good appreciation, you will know how to get its charm. A calm life surrounded by nature is what the owner of these types of homes is looking for.

Contact with nature is fundamental in this house. You may not be able to live without a barbecue every weekend, and for that, there is nothing better than breathing fresh air from a huge backyard. That is why we invite you to give these homes away from big cities a chance and start a quiet retreat.

The Wabi-Sabi design and how to integrate it in your home

Who would say that an idea so elaborate in decoration that practically changes all the standard design rules would come from Japan? Recall how we went from the colorful and psychedelic ideas of the 80s to polished and formal designs in the 90s. However, since before the 80s, the standard design concept was being challenged, as we can see with the so-called Wabi Sabi design.

Normally, it would be unthinkable to accept construction or ornaments with imperfections, but in Japan they see this as a way to reflect on the impact that nature has on us, which has made it popular to get worn and imperfect objects as part of the architecture and the decoration.

This is just one of the ways to honor the most classic and rudimentary lifestyles when not everything revolved around the pursuit of perfection. If we want to recover that link with nature and the passing of time, then we invite you to know about the Wabi Sabi.

What is Wabi-Sabi?

t7-30 The Wabi-Sabi design and how to integrate it in your home

The first thing we should know is that not even the Japanese have an exact definition of what Wabi Sabi is. This is more a mixture of meanings, where Wabi refers to “the beauty of humility” and Sabi is “The deterioration of the passing of time”. Therefore, the combination of both translates into a style that seeks to celebrate the imperfections caused by the natural passage of time.

In this way, the Wabi Sabi design invites us to accept things as they are and not try to seek a perfection that does not exist in nature. In buildings, these imperfections are recurrent. The passage of time inevitably deteriorates materials, such as concrete, paints, metals.

However, we have to understand that this concept is not an excuse to let things deteriorate, we are talking about a way of understanding life and accepting it as it happens. The genre dates back to traditional tea ceremonies. These (also highly practiced today as part of Japanese culture) were performed for shoguns and people of high importance.

One of them, known as the philosopher Ryku, had a particular way of celebrating these ceremonies. Instead of using the most expensive dishes, he demanded to be served in irregular cups, presumably handmade by novice artisans.

For the philosopher, this was a way to show his satisfaction with what he possessed, and he maintained that if you could accept these humble belongings, you could be happy with the person you are. That is why the Wabi Sabi is not only a way of decorating but also a way of understanding what surrounds us and accepting it in the most positive way possible.

In the sets, this translates as spaces with dim lighting, worn structural elements or unplanned details, the use of natural materials without treatments so that they can suffer the natural passage of time, and of course, all this while maintaining a clean and cozy atmosphere.

Enjoying the Wabi Sabi Style in our home

The Wabi Sabi design does not have to be completely random. There is a lot of Wabi Sabi furniture that we can use to control the appearance of these abstract spaces. Although it may be a bit difficult to understand at first, with the following list we hope you understand how to implement it.

Don’t look to fix the imperfections

t7-34 The Wabi-Sabi design and how to integrate it in your home

We have to learn to appreciate the beauty of imperfections. Many believe that when a cup is broken, we should discard it immediately or try to repair it by hiding the parts where it broke.

In Japan, they have learned to appreciate these details, so much so that there is an ancient technique called Kintsugi, where to repair the broken ceramic pieces, a mixture of varnish with gold, silver or platinum powder is used, so that when this mixture dries it stands out.

Another example that we can see applied in modern architecture is that of brutalism, where concrete walls and bricks are left in gray work (that is, they are not covered). These untreated materials show striking impurities that are perfect for minimalist and industrial works.

Wood is another material where imperfections can be easily appreciated. The houses and works restored in wood retain this quality of suffering from the passage of time. Many owners are looking for restored houses to enjoy wabi sabi at its best.

A mixture of artisanal and manufactured goods

t7-33 The Wabi-Sabi design and how to integrate it in your home

The Wabi Sabi will always put artisan products ahead. Each artisanal product is different from the previous one, even in small details, quite the opposite of what happens with mass production where the molds are all similar.

That is why homemade products are so popular since they allow us to appreciate the originality and charisma of each piece. Entering the world of crafts is a way to start decorating your home with the wabi sabi design, since everything you produce, be it a cloth, a vase, or a sculpture, will have your personal touch.

A controlled disorder

The casual location of different pieces of furniture helps create that natural environment in the wabi sabi interior design. We can manipulate some elements to create an environment where not everything is perfectly located or arranged, but still comfortable to live.

Some loose pillows, located in irregular patterns, perhaps a carpet that is not perfectly stretched, or even curtains where the fabric is fraying, are some options that will not alter the comfortable habitability of your home.

Textures are fundamental

t5-18 The Wabi-Sabi design and how to integrate it in your home

This part is easier to apply if the construction of our home is in some material such as concrete or wood since they can easily perish to nature, but if we have other more durable materials, we can always bring some textures with the furniture. Wooden chairs and tables, or frames and metallic ornaments are valid shortcuts.

Nature can never be missing

t7-29 The Wabi-Sabi design and how to integrate it in your home

Although this is an element that in general should not be lacking in any decorative style, when it comes to a wabi sabi home, we have to place special emphasis on introducing nature into our lives.

There is nothing more imperfect and perfect than a plant. Its growth has a logical sense that results from a natural response, but the way it grows and develops continues to be random in its conception. No one knows where a leaf or a flower will be born.

The best companion for these organic patterns is to combine natural colors in the furniture, such as green or brown. Also, the use of more handmade materials such as wood or ceramic helps keep the imperfections pleasant.

Stay authentic

t7-32 The Wabi-Sabi design and how to integrate it in your home

The best thing about the wabi sabi style is that it allows us to keep our tastes authentic. This is not a definite pattern of decoration, so we can mix how many elements fascinate us.

Life is more than a couple of options, any piece, however extravagant, can be an integral part of our decoration. An unexpected piece helps create originality and a striking touch that will make all your guests look at it. Arts projects are a way of applying this customization idea to the maximum exponent.

A minimum investment

t7-31 The Wabi-Sabi design and how to integrate it in your home

Another advantage of adopting the wabi sabi is that we can save money thanks to its simple and natural approach. As part of what makes this philosophy special is the originality of things, we don’t have to buy expensive pieces that seem to stand out just because they are expensive. Concrete is an example of how simplicity is adopted without having to be extremely minimalist.

We have said it before; a fundamental part of this design is the use of textures, which goes a bit against the original idea of minimalism.

The best vintage look

t7-36 The Wabi-Sabi design and how to integrate it in your home

As mentioned previously, artisanal products are much better than mass-produced products in this philosophy. You can add vintage decorations in modern spaces in moderate quantities. Do you like to travel frequently? Then try to buy eccentric ornaments for your home.

The colors of nature

t7-37 The Wabi-Sabi design and how to integrate it in your home

Taking a walk in a forest is the most relaxing thing we can do. The atmosphere of tranquility that is breathed is not only thanks to nature, but also to the colors that surround us. Greens, blues, browns, all these give us serenity and peace of mind. If you want to opt for a more traditional project, then painting the rooms with these tones works as an alternative.

Adopting a lifestyle

t7-39 The Wabi-Sabi design and how to integrate it in your home

If you want to enter the Wabi Sabi wave, then you must remember that this is a philosophy and not an artistic movement. We have to be able to appreciate the charm of spending time on our surroundings, and accept the imperfections of things, since they are not foreign to aging, just as we are not immortal.

If you want to give your life an explosion of spontaneity, then adopting the wabi sabi way of life can be a way to change the meticulous and programmed mentality that we have within society. A different way to relax and appreciate every little detail of life.
